About the Pastor

Reverend Quavon Newton


Reverend Quavon Newton has endured many hardships and overcame many obstacles at a very young age. He was kicked out of high school, shot at, arrested, and even succumbed to the streets’ pressure by selling drugs. After then having to obtain his G.E.D., he overcame those obstacles. He later became the Assistant Vice President Financial Center Manager in his district at Bank of America.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Albertus Magnus College and a Master of Divinity Degree from the Yale University Divinity School where he received the Yale University Oliver Ellsworth Daggett Award for ability, diligence, Christian character and promise of usefulness as a preacher. He is currently a Doctoral candidate at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH.

He was first ordained Minister by his father, Bishop Ezekiel Newton, while serving as the Youth Pastor of the Winning Word Church of Christ. He then served as the Youth and Young Adult Minister at Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in New Haven, CT, for three years. He was ordained Elder by The Right Reverend Bishop Dennis V. Proctor.

In June 2016, he was appointed as Pastor of the Mount Pleasant A.M.E. Zion Church in Danbury, CT, where he also served as the 2nd Vice President of the Greater Danbury Branch NAACP and led the congregation to doubling their weekly attendance.

In June 2019, he was then appointed as Pastor of the Rush Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, Jamaica, NY. He led that congregation to doubling its attendance, increasing the staff and budget, and investing over $100k in upgrades and renovations during the pandemic. As of June 2022, he now serves as Pastor of the St. Stephen AME Zion Church in Asbury Park, NJ. During his first year at St. Stephen, the church welcomed 99 new members and became the fastest growing church in the North Eastern Episcopal District.

He is currently as Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies at Clinton College in Rock Hill, SC.

He is married to the lovely Ashley Newton and father to Qamari, Eden, and Quinn. He is also a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
